The Sandtray is a well-established therapeutic process commonly employed by Play Therapists across all age groups. According to Homeyer and Sweeney (2011), the Sandtray process is inherently therapeutic as it facilitates play and fosters relationships. Nonetheless, the conventional office Sandtray set up poses challenges related to cost, portability, and storage of the tray, sand, and miniatures.
The Virtual Sandtray App represents a groundbreaking tool for therapists to address these limitations and be able to work in diverse settings. The app enables qualified therapists to engage with clients in various environments such as hospitals, crisis intervention sites, practicum, and internship locations, where transporting a traditional Sandtray setup is inconvenient or unfeasible.
Moreover, the digital features offer opportunities for incorporating elements and concepts that are not feasible with a traditional Sandtray. These features include saving environments for future reference, capturing screenshots of environments, utilizing different backgrounds, rotating the tray, incorporating weather elements like fire, limited animation, and adjusting the size of items. Expansion packs are available for purchase alongside the standard sandtray pack, providing therapists with a versatile collection that can accompany them anywhere.
